Blessed Mariam Baouardy was a Melkite Greek Catholic Carmelite nun. She was born on January 5, 1846 in I'billin. In April 1878 she played an important role in the identification of the Biblical Emmaus thanks to a private revelation. She died on August 26, 1878 in Bethlehem. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on 13 November 1983.
In I'billin a kindergarten, the Miriam Bawardi Elementary School and a junior high school are named after Mariam Baouardy.
